About the course
Owner-builder work is any work, including supervision and coordination of the construction,alterations, repairs or additions to a property.
Where the construction cost exceeds $10,000 and requires a development consent you must complete this course and obtain a construction white card prior to applying for an owner builder permit with NSW Fair Trading.
Course outline
The program will introduce you to the multitude of obligations of being an Owner Builder. It will provide with an understanding of:
- The compliance obligations relating to building, renovating and refurbishing a home.
- The supervisory and management issues relating to managing a building site.
- Their responsibility to occupational health and safety during the construction process.
- Their ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- The essential financial aspects relating to estimating, cash flow and job costing.
- The critical areas of contracts and contract management with suppliers and contractors.
- How important effective communication is to the project.
Unit of competency
The Owner Builder Course is made up of 5 Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:
- CPCCWHS2001A Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
- CPCCCM2001 Read and interpret plans and specifications
- CPCCCM1011A Undertake basic estimation and costing
- CPCCCM1013 Plan and organise work
- CPCCCM1014 Conduct workplace communication
If you have completed any of the above units during other qualifications at TAFE or other training organisations you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning which means you may not need to complete some or all of the training.
This course is approved by NSW Office of Fair Trading and is required to obtain the Owner Builder Permit in NSW.
